Kubernetes uses etcd (A distributed key value store) to store variety of data which includes the cluster state, application configurations, and secrets. By default, the data that is being persisted to the disk is not encrypted. Any attacker that is able to gain access to this database can exploit the cluster since the data is stored in plain text. Hence, it is a security risk for Kubernetes that needs to be addressed.
