Before we discuss what ingress controllers are, it will be important to start off understanding about the Ingress resource.

An ingress is an API object that manages external access to the services in a kubernetes cluster. It is capable to provide load balancing, SSL termination and name-based virtual hosting. In otherwords, Ingress exposes HTTP and HTTPS routes from outside the cluster to services within the cluster. Traffic routing is controlled by rules defined on the Ingress resource.
